Engineering > Fire & Life-Safety > About FLS The Fire & Life-Safety Group (FLS)Duties of the Campus Fire MarshalFire Prevention and Code EnforcementThe campus Fire Marshal is the authority having jurisdiction on fire-safety and life-safety issues for the CU-Boulder campus. Fire prevention duties include conducting routine inspections of campus buildings and addressing fire-safety concerns and questions brought up by building occupants or other campus personnel. Fire-safety training is provided to students, faculty and staff upon request. The fire marshal also reviews documents for new construction, remodeling and renovations, works with campus authorities in issuing construction permits, and is involved with other Facilities Management groups, including Fire Systems Group, for inspection and testing of fire protection systems. The Fire and Life-Safety Group also prepares emergency evacuation plans for campus buildings and writes the University Standards related to fire suppression systems. Emergency Response The campus Fire Marshal responds to fire emergencies when called, 24 hours a day, as well as assisting the emergency incident commander and fire investigation teams upon request. Qualifications include sophomore or junior engineering major (freshmen with exceptional academic credentials may apply), knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, technical writing skills, and the ability to work independently.
