Design Review Board

When a new building or major renovation is proposed for the Boulder Campus, who approves the design so that it is consistent with the architectural style?  What is the process for approval?

The first review and approval is through the Campus Architect at the Department of Facilities Management.   The second review and approval is by the University Design Review Board (DRB).  For presentation requirements, see the Capital Construction Glossary page.

Who is the Design Review Board and what is their role?

The DRB was formally created in 1968 by the president of the University to review and approve architectural design and campus planning for the three University of Colorado campuses.  The Campus Architect on each campus brings to the DRB his or her findings on building design, campus land planning design, or any other design issues that involved change to the physical appearance of his or her campus.  The DRB usually meets on the second Thursday and Friday of even-numbered months to address projects large and small.

There are four members appointed by the President − two external architects / landscape architects, a faculty member from the CU College of Architecture and Planning, and a senior staff member from the President's Office.  The University of Colorado DRB was one of the first such review authorities in the country.   Over the years it has developed a reputation among consultant architects as assistive rather than confrontational in its findings. The Boulder Campus has been well served by the DRB's careful stewardship of the contextual and historic continuity of the legacy left to us by architect Charles Z. Klauder and campus planner Hideo Sasaki.

Klauder designed all buildings on the Boulder Campus between 1921 and 1939;   many consider Sewall Hall as one of his best efforts.  Since then, most buildings have echoed this universally admired style which as been called "Tuscan Vernacular."   It has been the joint responsibility of the Campus Architect and the DRB to ensure that whenever physical change happens, it does not harm the campus environment, but enhances it.  The Boulder Campus has been described as a prime state asset belonging to all citizens of the State of Colorado.  The DRB plays a major role in keeping the built environment of the Boulder Campus at the highest level of quality.

The next DRB meeting is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2008.  It will be at the University of Colorado at Boulder, at the
Wolf Law Building, Conference Room 480 - 2450 Kittredge Loop Road.     http://www.colorado.edu/law/about/visitus.htm
